Elevated homocysteine levels in the blood has been shown to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, depression, and dementia [Gaby2011, pg 291].

Dr. Weyrich notes that while correlation does not prove causation, interventions that lower homocysteine levels may be an important therapeutic target for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

In particular, Dr. Weyrich notes that deficiency of vitamins B6, B12, folate or 5-MTHF may result in elevated homocysteine levels, so that supplementation with appropriate doses of these B vitamins may be beneficial in lowering homocysteine levels, while reducing cardiovascular risks through other pathways.
