Overview

A sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Usually curable by antibiotics, but antibiotic resistant strains are becoming more prevalent. Can affect the mucus membranes of the genitals, anus, oral cavity, and eyes. May be asymptomatic, especially in females. Sequelae include infertility, heart disease, joint pain, and meningitis.

Prevention is by abstinence or monogamy, although careful and consistent condom use may provide some protection.
