Overview

Gastritis is an inflammation if the stomach lining. It may be caused bacterial or viral infections, and in particular by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Epigastric pain.
  • Fever/Nausea/Vomiting.
  • Possible frequent stool.

Etiology

Gastritis is often a consequence of overuse of antacids, which results in reduced stomach acidity (hypochlorhydria), which in turn reduces the physical barrier to infection.

Sequelae

If untreated, an ulcer may result.
